Dr. Maureena Bivins
Hi, I’m Dr. Maureena Bivins. Welcome to my blog. I am a licensed acupuncturist and somatic therapist in Westlake Village, California. I have some very exciting things to share with you about my personal journey to health and wellness and how I have made use of those lessons to build a meaningful and satisfying career in the fields of health, beauty, and wellness.
My interest in health and wellness began in my youth, as a student in school. I was very curious about the workings of the human body and human behavior. Early on, I realized that if the body/mind is provided with the resources and support that it lacks, it has the wisdom to know how to use those resources to the best advantage. I also learned that to thrive, a child needs a stable, supportive environment. So I have a keen interest in early childhood development stages.
As an adult, I sought out education in alternative medicine, receiving a Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine from Samra University where I studied
Traditional Chinese Medicine,
Japanese Meridian Theory, and
Sasang Constitutional Medicine. At the same time,
I augmented my therapeutic physical medicine skills by studying several types of osteopathic-based manual therapies known as craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation through the Upledger Institute. I also completed a three-year certification training in trauma resolution, known as Somatic Experiencing (SE). SE is a naturalistic model of stress-reduction formulated by Peter Levine. More recently, I completed my doctorate in Psychology with an emphasis in Somatics. The somatic track explored the many ways life experience impacts physical and psychological health and well-being. My studies focused on early life experience and how it influences health across the lifespan. Finally, further studies in biophysics and bioenergetics have led me to adopt a new model of the human body: body as information system, in place of body as machine. All body systems are interconnected and respond moment-by-moment to internal and external signals from the environment. These signals drive bodily processes that underlie health and seem to have the ability to turn genes on and off. It can be a relief to know that in many instances, we are NOT victims of our genetic heritage. In fact, there is an entirely new field of study about this phenomena known as epigenetics. This perspective has helped me to “think out of the box” so that I can approach your health concerns in an innovative way, within my scope of practice.
Beauty is a natural extension of health and wellness and many of the energy medicine modalities like acupuncture, frequency medicine (microcurrent, LED color therapy, essential oils, and gemstones) Chinese Facial Diagnosis and Meridian Theory have a natural application for facial rejuvenation and healthy aging.
It is my hope that you will find this blog engaging and thought-provoking.
To your health!
